PV Cells - Solar Cells

In 1839, Edmond Becquerel discovered the process of using sunlight to produce an electric current in a solid material

The Sun produces For every 9 sqft 1000 kWh of energy in Texas

The photoelectric effect is the basic physical process by which a PV cell converts sunlight into electricity.

PV panels are solid-state & are therefore very rugged, At present, panels based on crystalline & polycrystalline silicon solar cells

Solar photovoltaic (PV) collectors using polycrystalline silicon solar cells are more common

Solar photovoltaic (PV) collectors have gradually increased in efficiencies, while costs have decreased the last three decades

PV have been reported to be as high as 40%, depending on the materials they are made. However most panels available in the market have efficiencies of the order of 15%.

Under concentrated sunlight, multijunction (GaInP/GaAs/Ge [germanium]) solar cells have demonstrated twice efficiencies of most silicon cell

PV cells are not 100% efficient- They cannot respond to entire spectrum of sunlight & not absorbed & wastes about 25% of incoming energy

PV cells are not 100% efficient because conversion of DC power into AC can consume up to 20 percent of all the power produced

Photovoltaic (PV) convert sunlight between 4 to 16% depending on the materials they are made of .
